What Is RAAP Conference?

RAAP (Raising Awareness Amongst Pilipinos) Conference is a one-day event hosted by Akbayan, held at San Jose State University. It seeks to give an opportunity for high school students to explore and learn about the various aspects that college has to offer through various workshops and guest speakers. The workshops will touch upon topics concerning higher education, cultural awareness, identity and the arts that ultimately aim to empower the youth and encourage them to attend college. Along with that, it also prepares high school students to be aware of the possible dangers that can happen during a college career. The event is open to all high school students of all different backgrounds.

Our Mission

RAAP 2015 strives to educate and inspire youth on important issues regarding social justice, higher education and identity, while developing and strengthening the youth’s knowledge of Filipino culture and history.

About the Theme

The theme for RAAP Conference 2015 is “Real Eyes. Realize. Real Lies.”, focusing on the identity of one’s self and how it relates to the history of the Philippines and the truth of struggle that Filipino people continue to go through in the Philippines as well as Filipino-Americans in America.

RAAP Conference 2015 will challenge participants to open their eyes and realize their potential as a student about to enter  or is already in higher education. Through each category of workshops, students will be exposed to various topics where they can discover that identity within in and ways that they are able express themselves. Participants will also be learning about the Filipino culture and what college life and beyond has to offer. Through this conference we want students to open their eyes and learn more about who they are on the inside and what truly matters to them; that it’s not about what you look like, what titles you hold, or what clothes you wear, but about how you carry yourself and how you can contribute to the world.

Through open eyes, an open mind and an open heart, we can make a difference and positively impact our world.
