Happy New Year everyone! We hope you’re enjoying winter break and spending time with family and friends. With a new year come new ideas, events, and friendships; it all begins with open house.
What is open house?
At the beginning of each semester, Akbayan holds an event welcoming all students who are interested in joining the organization. This is where you’ll get an insight into what activities, programs, and events Akbayan will hold for the coming semester. You will also meet the cabinet, or leaders, of the organization such as the President, Cultural Chair, and KAAMP Coordinator.
Programs will be briefly introduced, including KAAMP and internship. KAAMP stands for Kuya/Ate/Ading Mentorship Program and allows for new members of Akbayan to gain a mentor and essentially, a life-long friend. Each semester the program sees up to 150 new members on average and the numbers continue to grow!
The internship program provides a “behind the scenes” experience on how the organization is run, what each cabinet position entails, and how to grow as a leader. The program also focuses on event planning, fundraising, professionalism, and many more skills that may benefit you outside of Akbayan.
Throughout the year, events are held exclusive to each semester. During the Fall Open House, Friendship Games is introduced. This is held in October where the organization as a whole travels down to CSU Fullerton to compete in picnic-style games and cheer-offs against other schools’ Filipino organizations. There is also a RAAP Conference (Raising Awareness Amongst Pilipino’s) aimed at informing high school students about higher education, cultural awareness, and more to encourage attending college. The annual Ma”boo”hay talent showcase is held in the fall with local Bay Area artists who come to perform. Proceeds from this event are then donated to a charity of the Cultural Chair’s choice.
During the Spring Open House, PCN, or Pilipino Cultural Night is presented. This is a production run entirely by members of Akbayan. With aspects such as acting, choir, dancing, and more, it allows cast members to explore various talents. In previous years, there have been casts of over 100 people who work together to put on a spectacular performance.
With so many opportunities and events Akbayan has to offer, open house is the first step in enhancing your college experience. So come by and win some prizes, our Akbayan family awaits you.
