Bataan Memorial Hike

Thanks to everyone who came out to our first ever Bataan Memorial Hike! We hope you all had fun and really saw the meaning behind why we did the hike in the first place. Pictures from the event will be up as soon as possible.

PCN Info Nights

PCN Info Nights are coming up! There will be one on November 1st at 6PM and another one the following day, November 2nd at 6PM as well. Both info nights will be located in the music building, room 161. You don’t want to miss out on this!

Winter Formal

Winter Formal is coming up very soon, and this event is a great opportunity to look back at this semester with Akbayan. Come and share precious moments with all of the friends you have made in this past semester. This event only happens once a year, and just like high school prom, it is an event you do not want to miss.

Ticket Prices:
$40 single, $70 couple  until 11/19/11
$45 single, $75 couple until 11/26/11
$50 single, $80 couple thereafter, if there are still any tickets left.

This year’s theme is Alice in Wonderland. Get ready to be mesmerized in the magical world as you come to Winter Formal. Total Spacing is limited to 130 guests.  Buy your tickets early to reserve your seat and save money!

Tomorrow we will be hiking up Mission Peak to commemorate all those who lost their lives in the Bataan Death March and all the past and present wars as well. Contact any cabinet member for more information and rides.

On to Friendship Games. First of all, we’d like to thank everyone who rolled down to Friendship Games with SJSU. Although we didn’t win, you all poured your hearts out into it and that’s all that matters. Congrats to SLO for taking home SPUF and of course SF State for taking first place in games. TRI-FORCE! I know you’re all anxious to see pictures and videos from Friendship Games. Last but not least are our PCN Info Nights? Interested in learning about Filipino folk dancing? More into modern/hip-hop dancing? Do you like acting, singing, or playing an instrument? Be sure to check out our PCN info nights on November 1 and 2 starting at 6PM in the Music Building room 161!

FRIENDSHIP GAMES MANDATORY INFO NIGHT
If you are going to Friendship Games with SJSU, you MUST attend one of the two info nights we’ll be having this week. Important information such as hotel situations, rides, waiver forms, what to wear, etc. will be discussed and all questions you may have will be answered there. If you do not attend one meeting, you can’t go to Friendship Games. If you absolutely cannot attend, contact Sam at social@akbayansjsu.org

Aside from Friendship Games, we still have plenty of events coming up such as the Bataan Memorial Hike(below), our school supply drive ending this week and the 4th general meeting of the semester on October 27, 4:30PM at the Almaden room. Also, be sure to note down upcoming dates in December, such as PCN info nights, cultural workshops, and KAAMP Thanksgiving!

BATAAN MEMORIAL HIKE

Our 11th Annual Talent Showcase is today! Come out, see your favorite artists perform, and even get a chance to meet and take pictures with them!

If you haven’t heard, Andrew Garcia can no longer attend due to personal reasons, so taking his place will be Aj Rafael along with Summerbreeze! A part of the proceeds from the show will be donated to ProjectPEARLS, anon-profit organization dedicated to helping poor children in the Philippines, the BINDLESTIFF STUDIO, a community-based performing arts venue dedicated to showcasing emerging Filipino-American and Pilipino artists, and the FILIPINO MEMORIAL PROJECT, a coalition built to increase awareness of Pilipino historyby resurrecting a memorial.

After 11 years, the Ma”BOO”hay Talent Showcase has been a terrific outlet for up-and-coming artists to hone their talents in front of a large audience that usually consists of a sold-out audience of more than 500 people. Two years ago, headliners included Drop N’ Harmony, A.J. Rafael, and a collaborative performance featuring Gabe Bondoc, Leejay Abucayan, and Jeremy “Passion” Manongdo. Last year, our headliners included Melissa Polinar and Ramielle Malubay. This year, we have performances by:

A portion of our proceeds this year will go to Project Pearls, Bindlestiff Studio, and the Filipino Memorial Project. Tickets are on sale on this website under the “Donations, Registration, Event Tickets” page, or you can stop by the Akbayan table located in the art quad outside the Student Union every Monday-Thursday from 10AM-3PM. The MEET AND GREET package comes with a poster that you can have all the performers sign after the show. There will only be 150 meet and greet tickets sold and prices will go up on the day of the show so make sure to get yours today!

Open Mic

Everything Friendship Games related going on this week

Games practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-6:00. We need more girls so definitely come out! This will be the last week to join games if you’re still on edge about joining or not. Also, you MUST sign a waiver before practice. No waiver form, no practice.

Roll call practice is canceled on Tuesday so you can all come out to our open mic (info above). Roll call practices will resume on Thursday. You absolutely MUST turn in your waiver form and pay your registration fees by this Thursday and you MUST attend practice this Thursday if you still want to be a part of roll call. If you cannot attend this Thursday, contact one of the directors ASAP.

Bay Area Fashion Week Show

For those who couldn’t come through, no worries.  There’s still plenty of events coming up that you for sure will not want to miss. Here’s what’s going on this week:

For those who are interested in Friendship Games, there will be one more info night tomorrow in MLK room 225 starting at 7pm. From then on, there will be games practices every Monday and Wednesday from 4-6pm at Plaza de Cesar Chavez and roll call practices as well on Tuesday and Thursday from 8-10pm in the Event Center Studio A.

Also, we’ll be having a fundraiser at Chevy’s on Thursday, conveniently starting right after our General Meeting. Come reunite with your families, meet new people, or check out potential fams you could be placed in when revealing comes around.
