Open Mic

Once again AkbayanSJSU’s Open Mic returns for the last time this Fall Semester! This time around it is titled “One Mic”, meaning we all speak from “one mic” giving us one voice together. This is a safe place to come speak your mind. Come join in on the festivities and watch your fellow peers perform! It will be at the Spartan Memorial Chapel this Tuesday from 7PM-9PM. KAAMP Thanksgiving is this Friday! Come join us for an evening full of fun, food, friends, and most importantly family! It is a potluck meaning each person MUST bring a main dish or dessert feeding 6-10 people, beverages will already be taken care of. Also, in the spirit of the Thanksgiving season, each person must bring a non-perishable canned food item. These canned food items will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

General Member of the Month

Congratulations to our general member of the month for the month of October, Raymond Baltazar! Raymond attends almost every Akbayan event from yearly ones such as Friendship Games to biweekly ones such as general meetings.  Raymond is also a part of the internship program, and he always volunteers to help out at events by doing things such as taking pictures for media. PCN might not be until the spring but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t PCN season already! Also, we’ll be having a general meeting this Thursday, 430-6PM in the Almaden Room upstairs in the Student Union. The topic is the Pursuit of Identity. This will be the last general meeting of the semester, so you don’t want to miss out!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our first ever Bataan Memorial Hike! We hope you all had fun and really saw the meaning behind why we did the hike in the first place. Pictures from the event will be up as soon as possible.

PCN Info Nights

PCN Info Nights are coming up! There will be one on November 1st at 6PM and another one the following day, November 2nd at 6PM as well. Both info nights will be located in the music building, room 161. You don’t want to miss out on this!

Winter Formal

Winter Formal is coming up very soon, and this event is a great opportunity to look back at this semester with Akbayan. Come and share precious moments with all of the friends you have made in this past semester. This event only happens once a year, and just like high school prom, it is an event you do not want to miss.

Ticket Prices:
$40 single, $70 couple  until 11/19/11
$45 single, $75 couple until 11/26/11
$50 single, $80 couple thereafter, if there are still any tickets left.

Tomorrow we will be hiking up Mission Peak to commemorate all those who lost their lives in the Bataan Death March and all the past and present wars as well. Contact any cabinet member for more information and rides.

On to Friendship Games. First of all, we’d like to thank everyone who rolled down to Friendship Games with SJSU. Although we didn’t win, you all poured your hearts out into it and that’s all that matters. Congrats to SLO for taking home SPUF and of course SF State for taking first place in games. TRI-FORCE! I know you’re all anxious to see pictures and videos from Friendship Games. If you are going to Friendship Games with SJSU, you MUST attend one of the two info nights we’ll be having this week. Important information such as hotel situations, rides, waiver forms, what to wear, etc. will be discussed and all questions you may have will be answered there. If you do not attend one meeting, you can’t go to Friendship Games. If you absolutely cannot attend, contact Sam at social@akbayansjsu.org

A part of the proceeds from the show will be donated to ProjectPEARLS, anon-profit organization dedicated to helping poor children in the Philippines, the BINDLESTIFF STUDIO, a community-based performing arts venue dedicated to showcasing emerging Filipino-American and Pilipino artists, and the FILIPINO MEMORIAL PROJECT, a coalition built to increase awareness of Pilipino historyby resurrecting a memorial.

After 11 years, the Ma”BOO”hay Talent Showcase has been a terrific outlet for up-and-coming artists to hone their talents in front of a large audience that usually consists of a sold-out audience of more than 500 people. Two years ago, headliners included Drop N’ Harmony, A.J. Rafael, and a collaborative performance featuring Gabe Bondoc, Leejay Abucayan, and Jeremy “Passion” Manongdo. Last year, our headliners included Melissa Polinar and Ramielle Malubay. This year, we have performances by:

A portion of our proceeds this year will go to Project Pearls, Bindlestiff Studio, and the Filipino Memorial Project. Tickets are on sale on this website under the “Donations, Registration, Event Tickets” page, or you can stop by the Akbayan table located in the art quad outside the Student Union every Monday-Thursday from 10AM-3PM. The MEET AND GREET package comes with a poster that you can have all the performers sign after the show. There will only be 150 meet and greet tickets sold and prices will go up on the day of the show so make sure to get yours today!

Everything Friendship Games related going on this week

Games practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-6:00. We need more girls so definitely come out! This will be the last week to join games if you’re still on edge about joining or not. Also, you MUST sign a waiver before practice. No waiver form, no practice.

Roll call practice is canceled on Tuesday so you can all come out to our open mic (info above). Roll call practices will resume on Thursday.
